It is better to be ranked first for a "niche" keyword then not show up at all for a broad category. The users you do drive to your site through using more specified keywords will stay longer (lower bounce rate) and thus help your SEO. For example, if I was a used car salesman choosing a keyword for my online marketing, I might want to use the keyword "used cars"; however this keyword has a lot of competition. Instead, if I use the keywords "used sport cars" I have a better chance of a high ranking.
